The use of a felt mat helps ensure a smooth rotation of the record on the turntable platter. Often called a slip mat, their design is simply to sit under the record and on top of the platter.

Using a felt mat will help keep your records sounding fresher for longer, and prevent them from slipping while they spin so you never miss a beat. Its a good idea to update your slipmat every couple of years as it starts to collect dust.
